December 2023 AFAC Newsletter December 23, 2023 Who Are We And Who Do We Serve? Adjunct Faculty Action Committee (AFAC) representatives work collectively with Adjunct Faculty from our nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District. AFT Chapter Presidents appoint AFAC Representatives to identify professional issues and concerns of Adjunct Faculty and develop plans and actions to organize and mobilize in alignment with AFT 1521 vision statement. A Message From Our Co-Chairs Our AFAC Chair Dr. Jessica Saint-Paul presented at the 2023 AFT 1521 State of the Union on December 6, 2023. If you’ve missed it, please read the highlights below. I come before you this evening representing as the Co-Chair of your AFT 1521 Adjunct Faculty Action Committee, affectionately known as AFAC and your AFT 1521 Co-Retirement Liaison. I would like to first bring you greetings from the AFAC committee. Thanks to all our local AFT 1521 Chapter Presidents for your 18 presidential appointments. What a hot labor year for AFAC! We sincerely appreciate the dedication and commitment from Adjunct Faculty elevating and serving in our Guild because we embraced our members! This year, your advocacy and involvement changed the lives of hundreds and thousands of faculty and their families. Contingent faculty and all public servants across the country have lessened the burden of student loan debt. We have this new member-driven unifying benefit offered to all AFT 1521 members. Our voices and values were included in our new 2023-2026 AFT 1521 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). We were represented and have a better understanding of our rights to fair wages, benefits and working conditions. For the first time in the history of our Guild, eligible Adjunct Faculty will have an opportunity to secure health care with no medical premium for themselves and their dependents at parity to our full-time faculty colleagues. We also near the end of this year with a platform written for and by Adjunct Faculty to share our successes and challenges with our very own AFT 1521 Adjunct Faculty Action Committee newsletter! The AFAC Newsletter was designed and will continue to be written by our Los Angeles City College AFAC Representative, Erinn M. Horton. Thank you fellow Adjunct Faculty. Have a safe and happy holiday and happy new year. We look forward to seeing you in 2024! In unity, Co-Chairs Karen Sabbah & Dr. Jessica Saint-Paul What to expect in this newsletter: • #WednesdayWins for Adjunct Faculty • Getting Involved • Student Debt Clinics • Campus Updates • Adjunct Faculty Member Resources • & more!
