Dear Faculty Members:

I am writing to urge you to write to your state legislators in support of SB 252, a bill endorsed by the AFT 1521 Executive Board. This bill would require CalSTRS to divest from fossil fuels by 2031.

Two recent studies have revealed that members of CalPERS and CalSTRS lost money from their pensions over the past ten years because both pension funds failed to divest. Fossil fuel investments are risky and harm the long-term stability of our pensions.

In addition, while fossil fuel investments are extremely volatile and risky, fossil fuel pollution drives climate chaos in California – including extreme heat, flooding, toxic air pollution, water contamination, and wildfires. Our pension funds shouldn’t be used to leave an uninhabitable planet for our students, children, and grandchildren.
