Hot Labor Summer – June 21, 2023

Hi All,

Our union family needs our help to Win at their workplaces. Tomorrow there will be two union actions you can participate in.

1) Art Center College of Design Fight for their First Contract. For the past year, CFT has been working on negotiating a first contract for the ArtCenter College of Design. After months of bargaining, the employer is doing everything to fight the faculty’s efforts to achieve a fair contract. In response, there will be a rally tomorrow, June 22nd, at 10 am at 1111 Arroyo South Parkway, Pasadena, CA, 91105 (FREE Visitor Parking at 1000 S. Raymond, Paid Parking at 750 S. Raymond). Your attendance is hugely important. Please let CFT know if you or anyone from our local can attend. Sign-up using the link below. https://forms.gle/vkmzFRv5AQqWeGeUA. Wear your blue shirt and look for other Guild members wearing theirs.

2) Support Hotel Workers’ Fight for a Fair Contract Please join UNITE HERE Local 11, and community and labor supporters, at a rally and nonviolent civil disobedience action tomorrow, June 22nd, at 4:00 pm. The rally will take place on West Century Blvd., at the entrance to LAX, at Vicksburg Avenue.

Wear your blue shirt and look for other Guild members wearing theirs. When you arrive, you can call Julio Tsuha at 951-233-6028 to find our contingent.

Their union is seeking to create a hospitality workforce housing fund, in addition to better wages, healthcare benefits, pension, and safer workloads. Contracts expire June 30th, and employers like Hyatt, IHG, Hilton, and Marriott have failed to agree to anything close to workers’ wages to live with dignity in the cities where they work.

This would be the largest hotel worker strike in the modern US industry. During the pandemic, hotels received $15 billion in federal bailouts and cut jobs and guest services such as daily room cleaning. In 2023, hotel profits in Los Angeles and Orange County exceeded pre-pandemic levels, yet hospitality workers continue to struggle to afford a place to live in the cities where they work.

Thank you for your time.

In Unity,

A. James McKeever PhD

AFT 1521 Faculty Guild President
